Stepping Stones is a youth-powered, youth-centered, youth-led, and youth-authored collection of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for teachers, librarians, students, and all of us. This brand-new kind of anthology shines a light on the more than 200 youngest writers, ages 6 to 11, selected from over 45 towns throughout Maine. We honor the voices of the newest and youngest writers among us, because for years their teachers have asked us: Where are the books of my students’ writing? Can’t my students complete all the steps of becoming an author and be published, too? And don’t their stories matter just as much as those by the adult authors who write the books meant for them? We believe that a new or young writer is a writer whose voice deserves to be heard as much as, or more, than the older writers who they read. Their writing is inventive and honest, offering insights only they can offer to the world.
