Directions

The Telling Room is on the first floor of 55 Washington Avenue, Suite 1E in Portland, Maine. The entrance to The Telling Room is set back from the street, located between Fiore Home and Công Tử Bột. 

If you're on foot:
From Monument Square, walk northeast on Congress Street towards the Eastern Promenade for .7 miles. Turn left onto Washington Avenue for .1 miles. The Telling Room will be on your right. 

If you’re in the car: 
From the North: Drive south on 295 towards Portland and take exit 8 to Washington Avenue. Proceed for .5 miles down Washington Avenue. The Telling Room will be on your left.

From the South: Drive north on 295 towards Portland and take exit 7 to Franklin Street. Turn left onto Cumberland Avenue, then turn left onto Washington Avenue. The Telling Room will be on your right. 

If you’re on public transportation: 

By Bus: The Telling Room is accessible by routes 7 (Falmouth - Portland - Jetport/DHHS), 9A (North Deering via Stevens Avenue), 9B (North Deering via Washington Avenue), and the Metro BREEZ via the Greater Portland Metro bus system. 

If taking public transportation from South Portland, transfer at Monument Square.

If taking public transportation from Lewiston-Auburn, disembark at Metro Pulse and walk to Monument Square to transfer.

By Ferry: The Telling Room is a .8 mile walk from the ferry terminal. Disembark the Casco Bay Lines ferries at the Maine State Pier. Turn right on to Thames Street, then turn left on to India Street. Turn right onto Congress Street, then turn left on to Washington Avenue. The Telling Room will be on your right.

Parking

Parking near The Telling Room can be limited at times and we recommend allowing plenty of time to find parking when visiting our Portland studio.

Free 2 hour street parking is available on Washington Avenue, and many side streets off of Washington Avenue have additional free street parking.

Paid lot parking is available at 75 Washington Avenue and 105 Washington Avenue.

We welcome visitors looking to purchase books and find out how to get involved with The Telling Room.

In an effort to limit distractions while teaching, we are not open to the public when programs are in session. We frequently host events that are open to all community members, however, so please look out for those in our newsletter and on social media.

Holidays and Office Closures

Please note that The Telling Room offices will be closed during the following holidays and dates in the 2026 - 2027 academic year:

  • July 4th, 2026 (Independence Day)

  • August 24th - August 28th, 2026 (Summer Break)

  • September 7th, 2026 (Labor Day)

  • October 12th, 2026 (Indigenous Peoples’ Day)

  • November 26th, 2026 (Thanksgiving Day)

  • December 23rd - December 29th, 2026 (Winter Break)

  • January 1st, 2027 (New Year’s Day)

  • January 18th, 2027 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)

  • May 31st, 2027 (Memorial Day)

  • June 19th, 2027 (Juneteenth)

The Telling Room may also close, cancel, or postpone programs due to other events such as inclement weather. If so, Telling Room staff will notify program participants and their families.
