Like many of you, we’ve been actively following the progression of COVID-19 in Maine, in other parts of the country, and across the globe. In the interest of safeguarding the wellbeing of our beloved staff, volunteers, teaching artists, and students—and following guidance from local, state, and federal authorities regarding measures that best promote public health—we’ve decided to temporarily suspend daily operations, including all Telling Room programs and events, starting March 13th at 6pm. Please visit our Programs page for more information.
We’re excited to meet you! Now what?
A good place to start would be to convince your personal driver to bring you to The Writers Block on Wednesday afternoons where inspired young writers meet to hone their craft in our Commercial Street studio. All that's required is a quick registration and a committment to show up each week for a semester.
We also run two, year-long programs that require students to apply in September each year:
Our Young Emerging Authors Fellowship allows four students to write, revise, edit, and publish a book in a year with the help of writing mentors and our publications team.
Young Writers & Leaders offers fifteen international teens from Portland's public schools writing mentorship and leadership training for an entire school year.
Maybe you already have some great writing burning a hole in your backpack? Send it to us! We have a number of great ways to share it with our community. Young writers just like you help fill our Stories page with amazing pieces and it’s always open for submissions.
We also hold an annual Writing Contest every winter if you’re feeling competitive.
Or maybe you’d rather just read some great work by other young authors – feel free to browse some of our Publications.
Speaking of publications, did you know that The Telling Room publishes books year round? In fact, we have over 20 titles for sale in bookstores and 88 titles total in classrooms around Maine. If you'd like to lend a hand in making books and learning some trade secrets, a team of student editors joins with our staff each semester in our Publishing Workshop. Be sure to register in September or January to join!
Another great way to connect with us is to convince your teacher, principal, or homeschool group to visit us for a fun Field Trip, or bring us into your classroom (wherever that may be) for a writing Residency.
And finally, did you know we stay open all summer? In fact, it's our busiest time of the year! We offer some seriously fun, week-long Summer Camps that allow kids to try out writing while exploring Portland, the islands, and beyond. Summer Camps are open for registration by February each year.
