Summer Institute for Educators

Tuesday, June 25th - Wednesday, June 26th - Thursday, June 27th

Join us for one, two, or all three days of our Summer Institute for Educators!

This professional development opportunity is open to anyone who engages with youth, through writing or otherwise, whether you are a classroom teacher, a teaching artist, or someone seeking creative ways to connect with young people in your world. In each session experienced Telling Room staff members will share proven methods for deepening writing skills and fostering meaningful connections with students.

Day 1: Liven it Up! - This day of approaching teaching with a sense of play is designed for anyone who engages with youth—not just through writing—but across disciplines. We’ll explore everything from pedagogy to games to the more everyday interactions that build relationships and culture. This day will focus on building strong foundations with and between students in ways that go beyond writing, so that when it is time for them to put words on the page, they feel supported and ready and dive in. We’ll pass along some of what’s working for us, but please bring your ideas to share—this will be a collaborative workshop.

Day 2: Trust the Process - Curious about how to get young writers invested in the writing process? Want to make those final products sparkle? This workshop is all about digging in to teaching writing and empowering writers.

Day 3: Let’s Get Crafty - Poetry, essays, creative nonfiction, fiction — we’ll pack a little of everything in on this day. If you’re stuck on a genre or just want to deepen your repertoire, look no further. Everyone will leave with some exercises that work for both specific genres and across genres.

“The exercises you shared served to loosen my ideas and thoughts so that writing became easier; they were so creative, fun and engaging.”
