We're Moving!

CREATING THE TELLING ROOM’S NEXT HOME TODAY

On the verge of summer, we’re thrilled to share some exciting news with you—The Telling Room is moving! After over twenty years in our space in the heart of Portland’s working waterfront on Commercial Street, we are officially moving house. This September, The Telling Room will be opening our doors at:

55 Washington Avenue, Suite 1E
Portland, ME

The atrium courtyard at the heart of The Telling Room’s new space at 55 Washington Avenue.

We’ll transition to our next home nestled in the midst of the East Bayside and Munjoy Hill neighborhoods, carrying our foundation built over the past two decades with us—because creating a sense of home, of belonging, and possibility is paramount to all we do. We’re looking forward to the opportunities our new neighborhood will bring, as well as shifting to a larger location to hold our beloved programs, publications, and events.

We will continue to offer our scheduled summer programming at 225 Commercial Street through August 31st as we prepare to wish a fond farewell to our current space, whose brick walls have been shaped over the years with prose, poems, and the power of youth voices. In the fall, we’ll be kicking off afterschool programs at our new home on Washington Avenue.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone home to our sunny new studio! Run your fingers along the spines of Telling Room books on the shelves, spy out a cozy nook to write in, and pull up a chair. 55 Washington Avenue is just waiting to hear your stories.

TIME TO
GROW. WRITE. NOW.

For youth to realize their power and potential, they need to explore who they are in an environment that cultivates an active sense of belonging—a sense of home. Two foundational pillars that make our work with young writers possible are required to bring this about: Our People and Our Place.

We will soon be launching the Grow. Write. Now. campaign to seed a special fund that will support these two key pillars. Grow. Write. Now. will secure our space for the next fifteen years and support the people who enact our central work to create spaces that invite curiosity and help youth feel at home. Our goal is to raise $1,000,000 between now and June 30th, 2029 to ensure The Telling Room has firm footing for many years to come.

BE PART OF THE PLOT

We’ve arrived at the doorway to our future and we will need our whole Telling Room community to help us make this threshold jump! Stay tuned for more updates this summer, and please reach out to Executive Director Kristina Powell at kristina@tellingroom.org if you’d like to learn more and get involved today.
