The mind was warm and the heart was cold. The house creaked while the wind blew strong, As the heart and the mind battled with right and wrong. The mind was warm with the heat of logic. The heart was cold with the chill of lost love. The mind stood strong against the pain at hand. The heart wandered aimlessly in a desert land. Throughout the night the heart became still. During the day the mind went for the kill. The everyday faces passed through the mind's eye, As only one lingered in the heart, about to die. Soon there would be no battle to win. The heart would fail to release its sin. The mind would triumph and rise above, And the heart would never again Be united with love. -- Tyler Provencher, Calais High School In response to Wallace Steven's poem, "The House Was Quiet and the World Was Calm".
