For adult writers of all ages, Telling Room Adult Workshops are taught by accomplished writers and artists who, as experts in their fields, part the curtain for a night or a series of nights to demonstrate how they approach the craft of writing and storytelling. We call this set of workshops the Night Owl Writers Series. As the community of writers, artists, teachers, readers, and creative folks that helps support The Telling Room grows, we've developed these classes to engage that community directly. Whether you are an aspiring writer, someone who is enamored with the work of one of our instructors, or a professional writer, artist, or teacher looking for new insights into your work, these workshops should leave you feeling inspired and invigorated.

FROM IDEA TO SCREENPLAY:
How to convert the pictures in your head to film
February 2nd, 6:00-9:00pm
Currently at work on a screenplay, Melissa Coleman shares the techniques she's learned for turning an idea to script. In this three-hour workshop, we'll discuss how character, dialogue, setup, conflict, and resolution come together to create a compelling story, and look at the basics of formatting. You'll work in groups and independently to develop your main character and create an outline so you can go on to write a great screenplay.
Please watch these films (especially the first!) in advance:
Drama: The King's Speech; Action: Mr & Mrs. Smith; Comedy: Little Miss Sunshine
Melissa Coleman is the author of the memoir, This Life Is in Your Hands. A New York Times bestseller and Indie Next Pick for May 2011, the book was excerpted in O, The Oprah Magazine, and reviewed in publications including the New York Times and People Magazine. She's also a columnist for Maine and Maine Home and Design magazines, and serves on the board of the Telling Room.
